President Barroso unveils his new team

José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, today announced the portfolios responsibilities for the next Commission. The President has held detailed consultations with all the Commissioners-designate in order to assign the right jobs to the right people. The President believes that this team can deliver the agenda for change he set out in the political guidelines he presented in September, following his nomination by all 27 Member States and before his approval as President of the next Commission by the European Parliament.

The Treaty of Lisbon introduces considerable changes into the institutional framework of the European Union. Implementation of the Treaty is an opportunity to make the European Union stronger and more effective, especially in the domain of external policy. Therefore, every effort should be put into ensuring that the implementation of the Treaty results in changes that are beneficial to all member states – “old” and “new”, big and small alike. A strong political will is needed to take this opportunity and move Europe forward, so that it can embark on new missions and face the challenges ahead.

No changes in the dates of the Polish Presidency

Poland has no intention to exchange the term of the Presidency with Denmark, such information Minister M.Dowgielewicz passed on in Copenhagen. It was done in response to some solutions how to avoid the collision of the Polish EU Presidency and the parliamentary elections. The fixed period of Polish EU Presidency, the second half of year 2011 is not to be changed and the government finds it favourable due to planned for 2011 negotiations concerning the budget for years 2014-2020.

Programme of preparations for the Presidency accepted by the Council of Ministers

Council of Ministers accepted the programme of preparations for the Polish Presidency of the European Union Council, submitted by the Government Plenipotentiary for the Preparation of Governmental Administrative Bodies and the Republic of Poland's Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The programme defines work that should be taken between 2009-2011 to prepare Poland efficiently for holding the EU Presidency in 2011. The tasks of the Polish Presidency will focus on the three most important issues: holding the chairmanship of the EU Council meetings and its working groups, representing the Council before other EU institutions and effective cooperation in the framework of the legislative process as well as representing European Union in relations with the third countries and international organizations. The first outline of the Polish priorities will be ready in 2009. It is provided that one of the major points of the Polish Presidency will be actions concerning the EU budget review and negotiations on guidelines of the new financial perspectives for years 2014-2020.
